In industrial design (just like architecture) different design movements may be distinguished, each with their own philosophy and way of thinking. Form Follows Function is a movement that originated at the beginning of the 20th century.

The philosophy behind Form Follows Function is clear:

The design of the product is a logical result of the primary functions that the product fulfills.

Giesen.Design believes in this philosophy and sets itself the challenge of reducing designs to their essence.

 

However, we see that design is now part of the product's function; design helps branding, it helps to propagate and strengthen the Product Identity. This is the reason that Giesen.Design likes to speak of Form Follows Function 2.0.

Engineering Plastic Products

Many products are made out of plastic. This is not without reason. Plastic is an ideal material for mass manufacturing and selling products. However, plastic is a complex material and it requires a lot of experience and knowledge to make optimal products from it. Thanks to the many years of experience at Giesen.Design, we 'think' in plastics. This means that we can make optimal use of the properties of plastic and translate it in the design.

 

Of course, these days the use of plastic is under discussion. Giesen.Design shares many of the concerns and believes that many products should no longer be made from traditional plastics. There are very good alternatives for that.

However, we are convinced that the use of plastics in many products is still the best solution. If we handle plastic responsibly, it will certainly have a future.
